I need advice. I've never really been too particular with hams, just buying one from Walmart and baking or throwing it into the crockpot.

But the last few times I've bought at Walmart, the ham was terrible. The brands were the Smithfield and the Tyson spiral cut. It turned a funny, orangey dark color with cooking. I think it must be preinjected with something. It did not have a good taste. Ham should be pink, moist and lightly seasoned.

Maybe the lesson to be learned here is don't buy meat at Walmart. But I would appreciate advice on brands of ham.

I have always cooked my ham in the crock pot for 6 to 8 hours. They come out moist and tender and pink. I don't like the Smithfield hams, they turn a funny color when cooked in the crock pot, same with Tyson spiral cut. I used to buy a ham at the Kroger grocery stores that were excellent for cooking in a crock pot, but we no longer have Kroger's in my area and I can't find the ham at other grocery store. Can't remember the brand name, but it had a picture of a little man on the package, it may have been Smith's ham. It had 1/3 less sodium. I've looked on the internet for these hams and did find a Smiths, but it's not the same. I've tried the Tyson regular, not spiral cut, and rinsed them well or boiled for a few minutes to get some of the salt out and it comes out okay, but not as good as the one from Kroger's.

I get mine at Calandro's or Benoit's in Addis. They have good meat. I used to get them at Lablanc's in Gonzales but the last couple of times they were not as good.
I think they must be pre injecting, maybe to shorten the smoking process? But whatever, Tyson's is terrible.

I'm not trying to insult you. But are you sure you did not over cook it? I have seen them turn dark when cooked too long.
