We have tried Voodoo BBQ on Drusilla at the Interstate twice and both times it was delicious. Two main dishes we like the best are the pulled pork plate and the BBQ chicken plate. Both are outstanding. I did try the ribs once and found them a little dry and too done. Might have been a one time thing but haven't tried them again. Their BBQ beans are very tasty and I love the corn pudding. In fact every side dish we have tried we have found to be good. You place your order then sit down and they bring the food to your table. Prices are very reasonable too.

I've had the same experience at VooDoo. Really like the burgers and the chicken but the ribs like so many places are a little on the dry side. My favorite for ribs is Brother's BBQ--but they are only open for lunch. The Chimes is a close second--I have had their ribs several times and they are never dry.:)

I can't lie. It may not be the independent restaurant, but I really love Corky's ribs. Maybe it's just because I like dry rubbed memphis style ribs sans the sauce, but I've found their ribs to be among the best.

I also like voodoo, but mainly because they give you some unique options. The choice of sauces is nice, and their sides are just a little different.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried Couyons Texas BBQ on Burbank? I've heard a couple of good things, but have yet to make my way there.

I have not been there yet. Couyon's is one of three barbecue places in Baton Rouge I have yet to check out.
My current short list:
Couyon's on Burbank
Abe's on GeorgeO'Neal
Ronnie's Ribs on Jones Creek

I have to admit, Corky's ribs are pretty good. But to me, they are not as good as the original restaurants were. I had them in Memphis about 15 years ago and they were fantastic.

Brothers on Government has good ribs.

I have real soft spot for big hunks of meat on a grill. :)

:woohoo: Tried a BBQ place on George O'Neal last week called Tasty Ribs & Things.
I got the chicken and ribs and hubby got a 3 meat plate including
ribs, pulled pork and brisket. The ribs were the best we had both
ever eaten. The chicken and pulled pork was excellent and hubby
said the brisket was ok. It was far to go for us since we are in
Central but was well worth it. The owner says he is moving closer
to the interstate....sure hope it is I-12 and not I-10 but even if
it is we will definitely go back. We like Voodoo BBQ but this even
beats that especially since we don't like Voodoo's ribs.

You mean these ribs? :) :) :) :)

I've tried them out also. I thought the ribs were very tasty. They were well smoked but very tender and moist but not mushy. To me, ribs should still be a little chewy and these were perfect. The sauce was also particularly good.

The place was a little slow when I was in there but it was mid afternoon and it certainly was not the food. The location is a little out of the way. It's about a half mile east of O'Neal on George O'Neal, right before the big curve. Thomas Durst is the owner and, if I remember correctly, did his culinary training in California before moving back to our area with his wife, Effie. Wanting to open up a restaurant, they decided that Baton Rouge could stand a good barbecue place.

I think his only problem has been his location. It's just a bit far from the main drag. If he was located on Sherwood Forest, he'd be packed every day. He would be doing an awesome lunch business if he was just a little closer to the businesses.

Me? I've been known to drive to the next state to check out a good 'cue shack so I don't mind his location at all. So if you have a rib craving, check them out.

I have been all over the city trying to find some good BBQ. I have tried all the places listed but none of them have the little something that makes them amazing. Is there anywhere else anybody can think of.

Have you tried the ribs at Brother's Bar-B-Q on government street? They are only open at lunch. Sides are not outstanding. But the ribs I tried there were very good. Big, meaty, moist with a nice sweet sauce.
It's tough to find the the quality of barbecue here that I've found in Texas and even Mississippi. I hate to say it but that's my honest call.

I've got lists. Barbecue is an addiction of mine.
Just name your general area and I'll be happy to share. :)

What do you have good for the Biloxi-Gulfport area?

The Shed in Ocean Springs. Have not been there but everyone says it's worth the trip. And now they have opened up a second location just North of Gulfport in Lyman.
The Shed BBQ and Blues Joint, one mile west of U.S. 49 on Mississippi 53, Lyman. 832-1147.
Would love it if you made a trip and let me know if it's as good as they say. I've not heard a single bad report so far. Google them. Lots of good rep out there. I have a trip planned to check them out.

Ben's Bar B Que & More‎

I've never eaten there but friends in Long Beach say it's good.

Tay's BBQ - www.taysbbq.com

Tay's has been around awhile. Not spectacular. But O.K.

AAaahhhh, Anjac's. A favorite from my youth. I attended Ms. Gulf Coast Jr College when I was young and if you open my old text books today you will find multiple Anjac's barbecue stains. A pound of Anjac's ribs used to be the perfect accompaniment to a study session.
It was located on railroad st. Old couple owned it, chicken shack on one end, convenience store at the other from which they sold the barbecue. Brisket on whitebread sandwich could be grabbed in a rush and only cost a dollar. Everything was good. Loved the place.
After I moved back to Baton Rouge, I would still make runs to pick up a case of their sweet, peppery sauce.
Old folks died and the place closed. Sorely missed.
A couple years ago I heard that David Vickers and his wife had bought the recipes from the family and opened a new place which had been wiped out by Katrina. They are back up and running at the above location.
I went over and checked it out. The 'cue was good but not as spectacular as I remembered it. But solid.
Maybe I was just missing the friendly old couple or the little black lady with the gold front tooth who passed the 'cue across the counter. I used to see them about 3-4 times a week and they were all such kind, friendly people. It always felt good to drop by. :)

Hope this helps.

I have also heard great things about Ribs N' Things on George O' Neal close to Shenandoah, but it seems like the place is never open.

I don't know what's going on with this restaurant. We finally find a BBQ restaurant that
we both love and after 2 visits we also find that they are never open now. My mouth is
watering for some of their ribs and chicken! I know the owner has been wanting to move
to a better location so I keep checking their website thinking they might post something
there but nothing.
