Bergeron's Boudin & Cajun Meats is an easy place to miss. The small, nondescript, weathered building sits off Highway 415 in Port Allen, Louisiana. But the locals know where it is and the parking lot fills up every day. The owner, Moonie Bergeron, opened his shop at the urging of family, friends and coworkers who had been getting fat off his cooking for years. His small shop has prospered as the public discovered his knack for turning out a huge variety of tasty Cajun meats.

A Monday through Friday lunch special offers mouth watering entrees such as barbecue ribs, shrimp fettucine and the always available poboy. Every table was taken on the day of our visit and the line snaked from the counter to the door. That gave the patrons a little time to browse the racks crowded with overflowing trays of tasso, pork chops, boudin, cracklins, sausage, pork roasts, duck, and ribeye steaks.

After an hour of sampling, one choice stood out. The smoked boudin was excellent. It contained plenty of meat and just the right amount of seasoning against a rich, smokey backdrop. It was delicious.

An expansion is in the works and the future facility will offer additional seating and room for a band and dance floor. Good food, good music and a place to dance. You'll have everything you need to eat like a Louisiana native.
